RollFlex – an Innovation Project Centre

Why RollFlex?

The Danish-German border region is a pioneer when it comes to developing and distributing energy efficient energy solutions for the modern society. These solutions call for new technologies since limited resources in a globalised world require a radical mind shift in energy production and consumption. Devices made of organic materials such as solar cells and LEDs hold a strong potential in this direction. They possess entirely new characteristics compared to those materials that are available today: mechanical flexibility, light weight, low costs, and semi-transparency. This opens up for radically new fields of application such as, e.g., in smart windows or wearable technology devices.

Focused R2R technology

The Innovation project centre RollFlex is to contribute to the use of the large market potential for sustainable energy solutions by establishing the production of flexible solar cells and LEDs in close collaboration between the Mads Clausen Institute (MCI) of University of Southern Denmark, the Kieler Nanolabor of Kiel University (CAU), Stensborg A/S, and Phi-Stone AG (former FUMT R&D). This centre is based on a production facility for R2R print at the MCI, a R2R facility at Phi-Stone AG, a facility for R2R Nano Imprint Lithography (NIL) at Stensborg A/S as well as at the Kieler Nanolabor at CAU. This combination of competences within organic energy technology at the MCI and at CAU together with the competences within a large scale R2R print development at Stensborg A/s and FUMT R&D constitute the advantage of RollFlex.

Innovation in a cross-border network

Via joint research and innovation projects RollFlex wants to establish a connection between industry and universities and beyond the national borders of the regions. In collaboration with a large number of relevant Danish and German network partner we seek to map the entire innovation circle from idea generation to preproduction and by this create a strong, high technological and academic-industrial centre that will exist beyond the project life time. Moreover, the high innovation level will create a strong interdisciplinarity in the project, which will make the centre attractive for a number of further cooperation partners, particularly SMEs.
